“Y’all ready for this?” dust off your old late nineties cds, find your copy of Jock Jams Vol. 1, and grab a jersey. It’s hard to believe this archetype is over 2 years old already. Even harder still is the fact that this debuted as a TCG exclusive alongside Burning Abyss. It’s amazing what a difference one mechanic can make.
While its true, U.A.’s never made a big splash, they’re a bit of a one trick pony, they need more support (that may or may not ever come), and Midfielder needs some help. Nevertheless, they’re fun, creative, and the playstyle is certainly unique.
If you’ve never played them or just kinda looked past them – I hope I can give you another idea for something you can fiddle with and maybe (just maybe) troll a few unsuspecting victims. Let’s hit the field!
If a “U.A.” monster is Normal Summoned to your side of the field: You can add 1 “U.A.” monster from your Deck to your hand. Once per turn, if a “U.A.” monster(s) is Special Summoned to your side of the field: All monsters you currently control gain 500 ATK (even if this card leaves the field).
So you may have noticed that this interacts with normal and special summons. U.A. Stadium is essential to play the Ultra Athletes (in case anyone didn’t know that already). Stadium is both your primary searcher for the deck and also buffs your monsters.
The U.A.’s are all based on sports. Covering Soccer (I’m Canadian, don’t be a snob), Baseball, Basketball, and Football (again, Canadian). I’m waiting to see some Ice Hockey updated support (more than Penalty Box, but I’m jumping ahead). And as such with two “players” from each sport: one that plays offense, the other plays defense.
But we’ll get into the playstyle and the nuts and bolts of their playbook when we look at U.A. Midfielder tomorrow. Suffice to say that the field spell does exactly what it needs to.
The artwork is ok, not spectacular, but its certainlynot bad by any means. You need 3 of these and a Terraforming or two. And maybe some other tricks to make sure it stays alive.
