#Yugioh Card Review – Firewall Dragon

So Link monsters were a big thing and then…dragons.  Dragons make every new monster card classification scarier.  Think that normal monster is scary? Here’s a dragon! Effect monster? Effect dragon! Fusion, Synchro, XYZ?! Dragons!  Dragons are like when your friends would say infinity and you would say ” +1 “.  So when everyone is hype about Link monsters – I say… Link dragons.

Link 4 – monsters – min. 2
During either player’s turn: You can target monsters on the field and/or in any Graveyard(s), up to the number of monsters in a Mutual Link with this card; return them to the hand. This effect can only be activated once while this card is face-up on the field. If a monster at this card’s Link Point is destroyed by battle or sent to the Graveyard: You can Special Summon 1 monster from your hand.
Well now. You have a potentially nasty disruption or a decent comeback card.  Using mutual links, with Firewall Dragon possibly having as many as 4 mutual links, you can (during either player’s turn), once while this card is on the field, return monsters in either player’s graveyard to the hand.

This can be brutal for graveyard focused decks, but sadly won’t bother Pendulums all that much.  As for restocking yourself, it could be a little fierce.  Sadly the configuration of the Link markers means that all 4 will probably be impossible.  So 3 links is likely the best case scenario.

He does however come with a second effect.  If a monster you control that is linked to Firewall Dragon is destroyed by battle or sent to the graveyard, you can special summon a monster from your hand.

Fun fact: there are ways you can likely abuse this card since that effect isn’t once per turn.  In theory (if you’ve got the combo pieces) you can just keep going with this thing. Imaging crashing equal ATK monsters to blow up your opponent’s lines only to replace them outright with reinforcements from your hand that you could very well have picked up from grave that turn.  Have card effects that send your stuff to grave? Better replace those monsters!

Link-4 makes Firewall Dragon a little expensive and the 2500 ATK isn’t gamebreaking by any means, but as a light attribute there’s support out there.  And the Cyberse field spell will give him a little bump too.

I actually rather like the artwork for Firewall Dragon and think that if this is the direction for Cyberse art in general that it will be one of the better archetypes in that regard.

Oh one last thing.. I may have skimmed over the whole return to hand thing.  It’s not just graveyard – it can include the field also.  So he’s possibly a quick-play multi-targeting compulsory evac.  Just think about that for a sec.
