#Yugioh Card Review – Chemicritter Carbo Crab

No really, these things are adorable.

So going back to the more standard format for Spinnach Gaming, we start our next series – Chemicritters or (for our friends in the land of the rising Sun) Chemical Beasts.

Now I know many fan and players balked at the name change, but personally I like “critters” given the almost chibi appearance of Ox, Hawk, and Hydragon.  In fact, even Dioxogre (the first really “monstrous” creature) is pretty cartoony.  But let’s get into Carbo Crab!

This card is treated as a Normal Monster while face-up on the field or in the Graveyard. While this card is a Normal Monster on the field, you can Normal Summon it to have it become an Effect Monster with this effect.
● During your Main Phase: You can send 1 Gemini monster from your Deck to the Graveyard, then add 1 Gemini monster from your Deck to your hand. You can only use this effect of “Chemicritter Carbo Crab” once per turn

So Carbo Crab is an odd little monster.  First of all his typing is bizzare: Fire-Aqua? Carbo Crab is one of only three monsters in the entirety of Yu-Gi-Oh with this unique combination. Those other two are Fire Kraken and Performapal Pyro Lobster.  Carbo’s stats aren’t that wild at 700/1400, but then, he’s only lv. 2 and are you really going to make this little guy your beatstick?  Instead, you want something like Carbo for his effect.  While he is treated as a normal monster until he is Gemini summoned …

Side bar? No, Gemini Summoning is not a thing. But it’s what I (and other players) call using that second normal summon on Gemini monsters.  I’ve found that the few times I’ve used it, newer players have better understood what’s happening.

… when Carbo Crab gains his effect.  Essentially he becomes a two-in-one Foolish Burial and a searcher. But also he’s generic within the realm of Gemini monsters!  So you’re not beholden to Chemicritter monsters for either half of the effect.  While this doesn’t mean that you’ll be splashing Carbo Crab into any and every Gemini deck, it does mean that you can use him with any Gemini monsters that you splash into your Chemicritter build.

Of course, it’s limited to once per turn, but it would be bananas of it wasn’t.  Carbo Crab puts your whole deck at your fingertips and the sets up your graveyard for Hydron Hawk and Methydraco (who can special summon from grave) and Dioxogre (who banishes monsters in the grave to fuel a destruction effect).

Carbo Crab is an effective tool in a surprisingly functional brand of Gemini monsters.  A solid 2-3 of in any build of Chemicritters.
